Points for international campaigning on regional autonomy
Down to Earth No. 46, August 2000
- Lobby IMF on the detrimental effects of economic recovery strategy; on the need for an open debate on including issues like debt cancellation etc; to enable regional autonomy (and democratic government at all) to have a chance; argue against the over-reliance on foreign investment and commercial exploitation of natural resources.
- Monitor foreign investment and apply pressure to curb abuse of power, human rights and environment by foreign-financed projects.
- Support efforts to promote democracy at local level.
- Support strengthening of peoples movements at local and national level.
- Support rural and indigenous people's demands for control over land and resources.
